JLPP Awareness

Juvenile Laryngeal Paralysis and Polyneuropathy is preventable through testing. There is no reason for a puppy to be born affected.

What it is

JLPP is an inherited neurological disease affecting young Rottweilers. It damages the nerves controlling the larynx and limbs, typically appearing between two and nine months of age. Signs include noisy or laboured breathing, a changed bark, gagging or regurgitation, wobbly hind movement and progressive weakness. The condition is progressive and there is no cure.

How it is inherited

JLPP is autosomal recessive. A puppy is only affected when it inherits the mutation from both parents. Carriers are perfectly healthy and can be bred safely — provided they are never mated to another carrier.

  • Clear x Clear — no affected or carrier puppies
  • Clear x Carrier — no affected puppies, some carriers
  • Carrier x Carrier — 25% of puppies affected. Never do this.

Our position

Every Schwartzhund dog used for breeding is DNA tested for JLPP, and results are available to any enquirer. Ask every breeder you speak to for their JLPP results in writing — a simple cheek swab test is all it takes, and it removes the disease from a litter entirely.
